There are few choral works that transcend and plumb the depths of Good Friday quite like Faure’s Requiem in D minor. As with all of this French composer’s work, each soaring phrase mirrors the text perfectly. For choral singers, there is nothing quite like the experience of singing this entire work in one sitting because all the textures and nuance of rest and consolation are brought into one exquisite aural and embodied experience.
On April 7th at 10:30 am, the Glebe-St. James United Church choir along with members of the Canterbury Trebles and Centennial Choir will join with Rev. Dr. Teresa Burnett-Cole in presenting Faure’s Requiem within the Good Friday service.
A requiem is a formal setting of a mass for the dead usually celebrated in the context of a funeral. By presenting Faure’s Requiem in its entirety, participants will hear all the parts of this liturgical prayer. There are seven movements with soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir and organ. Faure suggested that this work “is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”
