New to GSJ?

What to expect on a Sunday at GSJ

If you're looking for a place to worship where ideas matter and are put into action,
Glebe-St. James may just be the place for you! All are very warmly welcomed.
Located in a historic building in the heart of the Glebe in Ottawa, Ontario,
the GSJ congregation tries to balance exploring the meaning of
our faith in these changing times with helping others as Christ calls us to.

Sunday Morning FAQs

  • What time are Sunday Services?

We currently host both in-person and live-streamed Sunday services that start at 10:30am each week.

To join online, head to the Sunday's page to find the service links, including a pdf of the bulletin with all of the texts, and that week's annoucements. The services are also available as recordings as soon as the service ends. You can find past serivces on our YouTube channel

In person worship is most usually in the Sanctuary, though more informal services are sometimes in Fraser Hall - the newer extension of the church building. Check out our building page for information about entrances and accessibility.

Coffee and conversation takes place after service in Fraser Hall.

In the summer, we share services with sister congregations St. Giles Presbyterian, Southmister United Church, 4th Avenue Baptist. Information on these services / service times will be posted!

  • How about children?

Everyone is welcome at Glebe-St James but we especially welcome children! There's a special children's time in each service.  After, children and youth are invited to join in on Sunday school, though all children and youth are also welcome to stay in the Service. If you are worried that your children might be noisy, bring them anyway. We don't mind. There are nursary facilities available for the wee ones too. If you'd be interested in nursary care during the serivce, please let the office know.

  • Should I bring a donation or offering?

Details on donating time, talents and funds to Glebe-St. James and the Mission and Service fund of the United Church of Canada can be found on our giving page (also called "How can I help?"). There are lots of ways, including online donations.

If you are visiting with us, we don't necessarily expect you to contribute financially – we're just glad you came. If you attend on a regular basis, you'll soon hear that generous giving of time, talent and treasure is an important expression of Christian faith, not just on Sunday, but every day of the week. You can decide on your own when and how much to give.

We also collect weekly donations of non-parishable foods, and welcome contributions to this ministry!

  • Is Glebe-St. James accessible by walker, stroller or wheelchair?

Yes! It is important to us that there be no barriers to accessing our buildilng. In 2022 we installed a new ramp on First Avenue to enter the sanctuary. Work continues to make the church accessible! Someone will be glad to help you make your way to the Sanctuary. More details can be found on our building page.

  • What is important to Glebe St. James?

Our vision statement emphasizes how we aim to foster growth both in the congregation, and out in our wider community:

Reaching -- Into Faith, Out to Others:

    With Openness and Inclusion,

    Love and Respect,

    Curiosity and Courage,

    Justice and Hope

On Sunday mornings you will hear a variation on this welcome, emphasizing welcoming and reconcilliation work that is ongoing in the church:

Glebe-St. James is an affirming Congregation in the United Church of Canada.  Everyone AND their gender, race, ethnicity, abilities or sexual orientation is welcomed and celebrated - our communion table is open to everyone.

We remember in gratitude the Algonquin Peoples on whose traditional land we now gather. We acknowledge their story and their stewardship of the land and water, the plants and animals, through many generations and continue to strive towards a better understanding of reconciliation and the role we can play.

  • Music at GSJ

Music is an itegral part of worship at Glebe-St. James. Led by our Minister for Music on piano or organ, along with the Glebe-St. James choir congregational singing is usually sourced from the Voices United and More Voices hymn books, with words projected up front for ease of following along. The texts of these songs is just as important as the beautiful melodies!

Outside of worship, there is also special concert series and other musical happenings in our building. Check out "What's happening?" to find out about upcoming events.

  • What happens at Coffee time?

Coffee time takes place after each service. It is a time to meet, greet, have a cup of coffee or tea, a glass of juice or water, and munch on a nut-free treat (we even have birthday cake, once a month!), and also to sign up for various activities. Join us!
