Ceremonies

  • Weddings

We are pleased you are considering getting married at Glebe-St. James! We are an Affirming Ministry, welcoming all couples to our congregation. Our Minister presides over or shares in the ceremony of all weddings to take place in the Sanctuary. There are more details about planning your wedding with us in this attached brochure.

  • Baptisms

Baptism is a symbolic action that signifies the new life God gives us as we join the church community.

Baptism uses water as a symbolic cleansing that signifies the acceptance of new life within the church family. The sacrament of baptism is the single rite of initiation into the Christian community, the church.

The United Church offers baptism to all ages. We believe the gift of God's love doesn't depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood.

  • Funerals and Celebrations of Life

The need to do funeral-planning when a loved one has died is never easy to fulfill. There are many decisions that you have to make at a time when you are already feeling confused as well as sorrowful.

Conducting funerals is one of the many areas of ministry and caring which Glebe St. James United Church is willing to provide to you and to others. We do want to help in this time of grief.

Along with the many decisions that need to be made there are also often questions about appropriate requests, costs of funerals, and other details. To help clarify some of these things we have compiled a list of our policies, things that are available in our church, as well as some answers to the most frequently asked questions into this document

Our Church Administrator would be pleased to answer general queries about ceremonies or space rentals at Glebe-St. James.

  • Sanctuary

We have a lovely sanctuary with exceptional acoustics, large performance area, and a seating capacity of 250 people, including a balcony accessible through the tower staircase.

Our sanctuary contains a four-manual Phoenix organ, a Steinway (Model M) grand piano, and recently updated sound and lighting systems.

Most items near the front of the church are movable, accomodating a variety of staging options for concerts, theatre or other performances.

Current rental rates are available here. For information about performing as part of the Live from the Glebe series, please contact our Minister of Music, James Caswell.

  • Fraser Hall

A flexible community gathering place, Fraser hall can be arranged for everything from receptions (foldable tables and chairs can be re-arranged), to basketball, to contemplative walking of the labyrinth design painted on the floor.

Fraser Hall can accomodate up to 200 people, depending on the setup, and has double doors opening out onto the hallway connecting to the Kitchen, as well as the Lounge and Art Room.

  • Lounge

Recently refurbished, this space can make a cozy place to meet with up to 15 people (depending on the setup). Direct access to the kitchen through a closable window make it ideal for serving food.

  • Art Room

A large boardroom table can host a meeting, or serve as a great drawing surface for kids. Accomodating 16+ people around the table (depending on how cozy the setup!), a window air conditioner can keep the temperature cool.
